Premier League of Belize: 2024-2025 Closing Champions Verdes secure Concacaf Central American Cup spot

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes FC will represent Belize in the Concacaf Central American Cup after emerging as the Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2024-25 Champions with the best cumulative record. The Cayo-based club finished level with Opening Season champions Port Layola at 43 points each but edged out the Belize City side by goal difference, earning their ticket to regional competition.

The Green Machine sealed their championship triumph last Saturday at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen, defeating San Pedro Pirates 2-0 in the second leg of the Closing Championship Final. With a commanding 4-0 aggregate victory—having won the first leg by the same score in San Pedro—Verdes left no doubt about their dominance.

Port Layola’s Concacaf aspirations dashed

Port Layola, who had represented Belize in the last edition of the Concacaf Central American Cup, watched the final with high hopes pinned on San Pedro Pirates. A Pirates championship would have secured Port Layola’s qualification based on their Opening Season victory and superior cumulative record over San Pedro. However, Verdes’ triumph sealed Port’s fate, shutting them out of the international tournament.

Concacaf qualification rules state that a team can qualify by winning both PLB tournaments outright or by being the champion with the higher cumulative standings across both seasons. Verdes’ superior goal difference over Port Layola secured their berth, proving that their consistency throughout the year paid off.

Verdes’ regional experience gives them an edge

Unlike Port Layola, Verdes FC are no strangers to international competition, having carried Belize’s banner in Concacaf tournaments since 1986. Their familiarity with regional football will serve them well as they prepare to take on Central America’s best, though it doesn’t guarantee a better performance.
