International News: Mexican Mayoral candidate killed during campaign rally in Veracruz

By Zoila Palma: A campaign rally in Veracruz turned deadly Sunday night when mayoral candidate Yesenia Lara Gutiérrez was shot and killed during a Facebook live broadcast, CNN reports.

Three others were also killed, and at least three more were injured.

The livestream showed Lara, a candidate for Mexico’s ruling Morena party, greeting supporters before gunfire erupted, cutting short the event with nearly 20 shots heard on video.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the attack Monday, offering federal support and coordination with state officials. “We’re coordinating… with all the support needed during this electoral period,” she said.

Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle condemned the shooting, calling it a “cowardly murder” and vowing justice. Authorities are investigating, but the motive remains unclear.

The incident underscores rising political violence in Mexico ahead of the June 1 elections, where candidates, especially at the municipal level, continue to be frequent targets.
