International News: Pope Leo speaks with Zelensky in first known call with foreign leader

By Zoila Palma:  Today, Pope Leo XIV held his first known call with a foreign leader speaking with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about ceasefire efforts and the return of Ukrainian children taken by Russia.

According to Reuters, Zelensky described the conversation on Telegram as “very warm and truly substantive,” and said he invited the pontiff to visit Ukraine. The two also discussed ongoing efforts to end the war.

The Vatican confirmed the call but did not provide details.

Pope Leo succeeds Pope Francis, whose stance on the war drew both praise and criticism in Ukraine for condemning the conflict but avoiding direct blame on Russia’s president.
