Revenue system overhaul to modernize Belize’s tax collection

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize is launching a major tax system overhaul to improve compliance, reduce evasion, and modernize services. Central to the reform is the establishment of a Semi-Autonomous Revenue Authority (SARA) that will replace the current Belize Tax Service.

SARA will operate with HR and budget autonomy, enabling performance-based management. Additionally, a new electronic invoicing system will be fully implemented by mid-2025, supported by the Inter-American Development Bank.

Other reforms include:

Transferring Land Tax collection to the revenue authority.
A new bill to streamline property transaction taxes, replacing outdated sections of the Stamp Duties Act.
A full review of the General Sales Tax system.

“These reforms are not just about revenue—they’re about fairness, transparency, and making Belize’s economy more competitive,” Prime Minister John Briceño said during his Budget presentation.
