Press Release

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, through the Department of the Environment (DOE) and its National Ozone Unit, Information Management Unit, and Chemical Management Unit, is hosting a national stakeholder engagement meeting with customs brokers on May 14 and 15, 2025, at the Grand Resort & Residences in Belize City. This two-day event reflects the DOE’s ongoing commitment to strengthening regulatory oversight, fostering interagency coordination, and supporting Belize’s compliance with its environmental obligations under both national legislation and international agreements.

By ensuring that imported commodities meet national environmental standards, the DOE is not only protecting human health but also preserving Belize’s diverse ecosystems. Compliance with international agreements, such as the Montreal Protocol and the Basel Convention, enhances Belize’s reputation and opens doors to global markets, promoting sustainable economic growth.

The purpose of the sessions is to provide an overview of DOE’s permitting processes, clarify our obligations under key environmental agreements, address regulatory challenges related to plastics, chemicals, and ozone depleting substances, and reinforce the role of customs brokers in supporting national environmental compliance.

The benefits of these sessions extend beyond regulatory compliance. By safeguarding human health and the environment, we are ensuring a healthier future for all Belizeans. This initiative is critical to promoting sustainable development and aligning trade practices with environmental standards.

In response to a high participation, the stakeholder group has been divided into two cohorts across the two-day event. Each session will include interactive presentations, open discussions, and practical guidance designed to support customs brokers in navigating DOE’s permitting processes and in fulfilling their responsibilities under relevant environmental regulations. Additionally, to accommodate those who were unable to attend in person, a supplementary virtual session will be conducted on Saturday, May 24, 2025, ensuring broader access and continued engagement across the customs brokerage community.

We invite all stakeholders to actively participate in this event and support the DOE’s efforts in environmental protection. Together, we can ensure that Belize continues to meet its sustainable development and compliance goals.
