By Zoila Palma: The United Nations is marking the International Day of Families (IDF) 2025 under the theme “Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development: Towards the Second World Summit for Social Development.”
This year’s observance emphasizes the critical role families and family-centered policies play in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially as the global community prepares for the upcoming Social Development Summit in Doha this November.
Set for 4–6 November 2025, the Second World Summit for Social Development will build on the landmark 1995 Copenhagen Declaration, reaffirming global commitments to ending poverty, promoting decent work, and fostering social inclusion.
The IDF serves as a platform to highlight national and regional initiatives that integrate family-focused strategies into broader development agendas—essential in tackling global megatrends such as climate change, migration, urbanization, and digital transformation.
The International Day of Families has been observed annually on 15 May since 1993, following a series of UN resolutions throughout the 1980s that recognized the family as a cornerstone of social development.
The day offers an opportunity to raise awareness about issues affecting families worldwide and to celebrate their role in building resilient, inclusive societies.
The 2025 observance aims to ensure that the voices of families are central in shaping social development discussions at both national and international levels, particularly in the lead-up to the Doha Summit.
