Belize Tourism Board inaugurate new wooden basketball court at Victor Galvez Stadium

By Zoila Palma: A significant milestone was reached for the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena with the official inauguration of the newly constructed indoor basketball court at the Victor Galvez Stadium.

The event, marked by community pride and sporting spirit, was hosted by Minister Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism, Youth, Sports and Diaspora Relations, in collaboration with the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) and the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Basketball Association (SSBA).

The state-of-the-art wooden court offers a dedicated space for athletes of all ages to train, compete, and nurture their basketball skills.

The ceremony opened with welcome remarks from Michel Chebat, Area Representative for Cayo North and Minister of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics.

Also delivering remarks were Devin Daly, Minister of State in the Ministry of Youth and Sports; Minister Mahler; and Dr. Karim Juan, Treasurer of the SSBA.

In celebration of the court’s opening, young U-8 male and female athletes participated in a dribbling and shooting competition, delighting the crowd and showcasing the potential of Belize’s rising stars.

In recognition of his instrumental role in making the project a reality, the SSBA presented Minister Mahler with a commemorative plaque.

The ceremonial first shot was taken by Minister Devin Daly, officially tipping off the SSBA Basketball Tournament, which followed immediately after.

This new facility is expected to enhance local sports development, provide opportunities for youth engagement, and serve as a hub for community events in the twin towns.
