By Aaron Humes: New Commissioner of Police, Richard Rosado, addressed the public regarding the ongoing State of Emergency (SOE) implemented due to recent incidents, intending to maintain public safety. So far, it has resulted in 118 detentions and 49 issued detention orders.
Commissioner Rosado clarified that while there is no curfew in place, existing restrictions have been enforced, specifically banning gatherings of more than three people in the designated lockdown zones. This regulation has already begun to affect local traditions, as exemplified by the family of 37-year-old Nelson Henry, one of the recently killed, who was denied permission to hold a wake in Ladyville, Belize District.
During Wednesday’s press conference, Commissioner Rosado explained, “The state of emergency regulation prohibits certain things, including the loitering and gathering of three or more persons in affected areas.” When pressed by reporters about the implications for wakes and even sporting events, he reiterated, “Any gathering of three or more persons is restricted under the state of emergency.”
With the return of professional basketball scheduled at the Civic Center for Friday night, newly appointed Staff Officer Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stacy Smith explained the need for compliance, stating that although activities may continue, they must adhere strictly to the established regulations to prevent any disturbances.
ASP Smith elaborated, “What we have known and have seen in the past is that many of these wakes that are held to commemorate the passing of loved ones are indeed catalyst for incidents that arise thereafter so yes the state of emergency regulations limit three or more persons indeed but it’s just that if the wake will happen, it will have to happen in a very organized way that doesn’t spill out into the street in terms of loitering and subsequent to that and certainly our operational efforts will be heightened in those areas.”
As the State of Emergency continues, police are hoping to get the cooperation from the community to help ensure safety and order. The latest SOE proclamation goes for one month from May 6 but may be extended.
