Prime Minister visits Statistical Institute of Belize

By Zoila Palma: The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) welcomed Prime Minister John Briceño for an official visit and briefing at its Belmopan headquarters today.

The visit provided an opportunity to highlight the Institute’s progress, strategic initiatives, and ongoing efforts to strengthen Belize’s national statistical system.

Prime Minister Briceño was accompanied by Minister of State in the Ministry of Economic Transformation, Hon. Dr. Osmond Martinez; CEO Carlos Pol; Senior Investment and E-Governance Officer Ian Courtney; and Aide to the Prime Minister, Vaughn Gill.

The delegation was received by SIB Director-General Diana Castillo and her senior management team.

During the briefing, the Prime Minister was updated on key developments, including the production of new statistical outputs such as annual monetary poverty estimates, international trade in services data, the producer price index, ocean accounts, and preparations for the upcoming 2025–2026 Household Budget Survey.

Highlights of recent achievements were also shared, such as the rebasing of GDP, improved labor force indicators, and the introduction of multidimensional poverty, food insecurity, and discrimination statistics. Belize’s rising performance in global data transparency rankings—including the World Bank’s Statistical Performance Indicators and the Open Data Inventory—was also noted.

The visit concluded with a tour of the Institute’s various departments, where the Prime Minister observed innovations in data production and application development across areas including economic statistics, census operations, systems development, and data dissemination.

The SIB expressed its gratitude to the Prime Minister and his delegation for their engagement and continued support of Belize’s statistical development.
