By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 30-year-old Belize City taxi driver accused of raping a female passenger remains in police custody tonight after his court arraignment was postponed due to the unavailability of a Magistrate.
Brandon Tillett, a resident of the corner of Booths Crescent and Neal’s Pen Road, was escorted to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this morning around 10:00 a.m., but his arraignment could not proceed. He was subsequently remanded back to the Queen Street Police Station and is now scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, May 19, 2025.
Tillett, who operates a taxi service, is accused of sexually assaulting a woman during an alleged taxi run. According to the complainant, on Sunday, May 11, around 8:00 p.m., she boarded a taxi she frequently uses after work. Instead of taking her home, the driver allegedly brought her to his house, where he had sexual intercourse with her against her will.
Though rape is technically a bailable offense under Belizean law, it is often treated with heightened caution by the courts due to the serious nature of the allegation and its rising occurrence in the country. In many cases, the prosecution objects to bail in the initial stages of the case.
Tillett remains in custody pending his court appearance on Monday.
