By Zoila Palma: Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, affirmed Friday that the family is based on the union of a man and a woman and emphasized the inherent dignity of the unborn and elderly, AP reports.
Speaking to the Vatican’s diplomatic corps, he also called for renewed efforts toward peace through dialogue and disarmament.
In his first major address since his May 8 election, Leo said peace requires action and careful speech, noting that words, like weapons, can “wound and even kill.” He urged governments to invest in family structures and protect society’s most vulnerable, including the unborn, elderly, sick, and migrants.
While echoing traditional Catholic teachings on marriage and life, Leo also signaled support for multilateral diplomacy and interreligious cooperation.
His comments come ahead of his formal installation Mass this Sunday.
