By Aaron Humes: This week, five young men—four of whom are minors—were taken into custody for allegedly violating a regulation against congregating in groups of three or more. The case, which was brought to court on Tuesday, was met with dismissal from the presiding judge, who characterized the police actions as “entrapment.”

Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado addressed the incident, emphasizing that the officers involved acted intending to safeguard those apprehended. “First of all, the police department does acknowledge and recognize the decision of the court. We affirm our commitment to upholding the rule of law. However, it is important to note that my police officers were acting in good faith in accordance with the state of emergency regulations,” Dr. Rosado stated.

The gathering in question occurred in a neighborhood identified as a high-risk area, prompting police intervention based on credible intelligence regarding potential threats. Dr. Rosado defended the actions of his officers, asserting that their intervention was aimed at protecting individuals from potential harm. “The information we received indicated that their gathering could expose them to risk. Hence, I believe they acted in good faith,” he said.

However, the judge’s remarks have raised questions about the appropriateness of police tactics, with critics arguing that the young men were unaware of their alleged wrongdoing, thus rendering the arrests unwarranted. Dr. Rosado acknowledged the need for the police force to reassess strategies aimed at engaging with at-risk youth in a more constructive manner going forward.
