By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Cayo Western Ballaz tipped off their Belize Professional Basketball League (BPBL) campaign in commanding fashion, securing a 77-57 victory over Belmopan Capital City Kings in the first game held in Cayo this season.
Dominant Performance
The Western Ballaz exhibited their offensive firepower and defensive discipline from the start, controlling the pace of the game and keeping the Capital City Kings at bay. Leading the charge was Dennis Flowers III, who scored an impressive 27 points, proving instrumental in his team’s victory.
Flowers received strong support from Aaron Allison, who added 13 points, and Jahiem Ciego, who contributed 9 points while providing key defensive plays. Their combined efforts ensured the Western Ballers maintained their lead throughout the game.
On the opposing side, Jevaughn McKenzie emerged as the standout performer for the Capital City Kings, scoring 16 points while battling against Cayo’s relentless defense. Brandon Flowers and James Moore chipped in 11 and 8 points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap as Cayo steadily pulled away.
Defensive Stand
While Cayo Western Ballaz showcased their offensive prowess, their stifling defense played a crucial role in securing the victory. The team forced Belmopan Capital City Kings into tough shots, holding them to just 34.4% shooting from the field and limiting their three-point success to 33.3%.
Meanwhile, Cayo’s balanced attack resulted in a 50% shooting percentage, with eight three-pointers adding extra pressure on Belmopan.
Belmopan showed dominance in rebounding, out-rebounding Cayo 41-35, and also forced the Western Ballaz to commit eight turnovers.
