By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The San Pedro Tiger Sharks made a strong statement in their Belize Professional Basketball League (BPBL) season opener, securing a 74-47 victory over the Corozal Cerros Suns in their matchup in Corozal.
Tiger Sharks Take Control
From the outset, the Tiger Sharks established their dominance, controlling the pace of play and putting the Suns on the defensive. Led by Francis Arana’s 16-point performance, San Pedro maintained consistent offensive pressure, finding scoring opportunities both inside the paint and from mid-range.
Supporting Arana was Keon Rowland with 15 points, while Tyrell Griffith contributed 14 points with efficient shooting. Earl Johnson chipped in 10 points, adding depth to San Pedro’s balanced attack.
Corozal Cerros Suns struggled against San Pedro’s defense, with Brandon Rogers leading his team with 11 points. Jason Vasquez added 9 points, but the Suns were unable to generate consistent offensive momentum.
Defensive Strength
San Pedro Tiger Sharks’ effective defensive moves forced Corozal into difficult shooting situations and limited their three-point success to just 15.4%. Meanwhile, San Pedro controlled the boards, out-rebounding Corozal 59-33, with Malik Hunt pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds.
Despite the Suns’ efforts, turnovers and missed opportunities proved costly, allowing the Tiger Sharks to build their lead and never look back.
