By Zoila Palma: The Belize Fisheries Department has announced the closure of the Queen Conch (Strombus gigas) fishery at the end of the business day on May 25, 2025.
The closure, declared by Minister of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation Andre Perez, comes after the national production quota for the 2024–2025 season was reached.
All conch fishing activities must cease from that date until the new season opens on October 1, 2025.
The department is urging fishers, businesses, and the public to use, consume, or dispose of all conch meat in their possession before the closure date.
Anyone found with conch meat after May 25 will face legal prosecution under the Fisheries Regulations. The public is encouraged to report any illegal fishing activity by calling 224-4552.
