By Aaron Humes: The education community is mourning the unexpected loss of Brian Castillo, a dedicated Education Officer with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, who died this morning in a golf cart accident. 42-year-old Castillo’s rented golf cart, which he was driving, collided into a fence on First Street in the San Pedrito Area, San Pedro Town.
Emergency services were alerted to the accident around 4:19 AM. Upon arrival, police discovered Castillo lying face up on a stretcher, exhibiting visible injuries, including bleeding from the head. Despite immediate medical attention at the polyclinic, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Staff Officer ASP Stacy Smith shared details about the incident during a press briefing, noting that the initial investigation showed only minor injuries initially, with further conclusions expected following a post-mortem examination. Despite the circumstances surrounding the collision, there was no immediate evidence of alcohol involvement. The post-mortem examination, however, will provide additional clarity on whether alcohol waa involved or not.
Investigation into the details of the accident is ongoing, with more information expected to be released as investigators continue to piece together the incident.
The Ministry of Education released a heartfelt statement honoring Castillo for his years of dedicated service and the profound impact he had on students, colleagues, and the broader community throughout Belize. Colleagues described him as kind, humble, and always willing to lend a helping hand.
