By Zoila Palma: NASA has warned that intense solar activity in the coming weeks could disrupt radio communications, power grids, and GPS systems on Earth.

The warning follows the strongest solar flare of the year—an X2.7-class eruption—captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which recently caused radio blackouts in parts of the Middle East.

The flare originated from a newly emerged, highly active region of the Sun now rotating to face Earth, MSN reports.

Scientists say this area could continue producing solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which may cause further disruptions and trigger auroras.

The Sun is currently at its solar maximum—the peak of its 11-year cycle—making extreme space weather more likely. While the UK Met Office notes no major Earth-directed eruptions yet, monitoring continues as sunspot activity remains elevated.
