By Rubén Morales Iglesias:  Yo Creek United claimed their second consecutive title in a penalty shootout after a hard-fought battle against San Jose Pumas in the dramatic final of the Orange Walk Football Association (OWFA) 2024-2025 Amateur 1st Division Closing Championship on Sunday at the Louisiana Football Field.

The reigning champions found themselves trailing after San Jose Pumas struck first, with Jesus Tzul finding the back of the net in the 62nd minute to put the challengers ahead. However, Yo Creek United refused to surrender their crown. With time running out, Leonardo Canul struck a late equalizer in the 85th minute igniting celebrations among their loyal fans, forcing the match into penalties.

With emotions high and the championship on the line, the penalty shootout proved to be as thrilling as the match itself. Yo Creek United triumphed 4-3, winning back-to-back OWFA champions.

A Battle of Determination

This final marked the second meeting between these fierce rivals in a title-deciding match this season. Having defeated San Jose Pumas 5-3 in the Opening Championship back in December 2024, Yo Creek United were eager to prove their supremacy once again. However, this time they faced an additional challenge—missing three key defenders due to suspension.

San Jose Pumas, determined to seize the opportunity, pressed hard throughout the match, aiming to exploit their opponent’s weakened defensive line. Despite their efforts, Yo Creek United displayed their depth, adjusting their tactics and showing grit when it mattered most.

A Season of Challenges

Yo Creek United’s road to the final was far from smooth. After edging past Mi Gente in the semifinals with a narrow 5-4 aggregate victory, they had to overcome adversity and doubts. Meanwhile, San Jose Pumas didn’t have it easy either, reaching the final after a dramatic extra-time victory over Progresso FC, displaying their fighting spirit.

In the end, Yo Creek United held their nerve, proving that champions are defined by their ability to rise above challenges. Their back-to-back title victory puts them as the team to beat in OWFA football.

An OWFA poll leading up to the match had favoured Yo Creek United 56% to 44%, and their fans were rewarded with yet another championship triumph.

With the OWFA season wrapped up, these two fierce competitors now get ready to represent Orange Walk in the upcoming National Amateur Interdistrict Championship (NAIC).

Congratulations to Yo Creek United – the 2024-2025 OWFA Champions!
