Premier Women’s League of Belize: Napoles FC triumph over Jewel Fury 3-2 on aggregate, advance to Finals against Sagitun GIRLZ

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Napoles FC have secured their place in the Premier Women’s League of Belize (PWLB) final, overcoming defending champions Jewel Fury FC in a dramatic semifinal replay on Sunday.

With Fury leading 2-1 and the aggregate score tied at 2-2, the match was seconds away from going into extra time. But in the final minute of injury time, Jinnelle Pott delivered the decisive blow, smashing home the winning goal and sending Napoles into the final against Sagitun GIRLZ on a 3-2 aggregate.

Napoles prevail in controversial semifinal replay

Napoles entered the match determined to settle the debate over their legitimacy as finalists, following the annulment of their previous victory and the FFB ruling that forced the rematch.

Just as she had done in the first leg of the semifinal when Napoles won 1-0, captain Roshanny Narváez opened the scoring on Sunday, putting her side ahead early. However, Fury fought back, equalizing before taking a 2-1 lead, which would have sent the match into extra time had the score remained unchanged.

But Pott’s strike denied them that possibility, sending Napoles into an ecstatic celebration.

A week prior, Napoles had initially been declared winners after match officials applied the away goal rule in extra time instead of proceeding to penalties. That decision, which even superseded the competition director’s authority, was later overturned by the PWLB Protest Committee.

According to the Protest Committee, the semifinal should have gone to extra time and, if necessary, penalties, because the away goal rule did not apply since both matches were played at the same venue.

The disputed semifinals ended 1-1 after 180 minutes, and both teams then scored once in extra time to make it 2-2. Officials ruled that Napoles’ extra-time goal counted as an away goal, awarding them the victory outright and skipping penalties. That led to the committee ordering a replay, setting the stage for Sunday’s dramatic battle, which again ended in Napoles’ favour—but this time without controversy.

Napoles march into the final

With the controversy now behind them, Napoles proved too much for Jewel Fury, asserting themselves when it mattered most. Pott’s last-minute strike sealed the win and ensured Napoles can now focus on the final round.

The PWLB finals kick off this coming weekend at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium, where Napoles will challenge season winners, Sagitun GIRLZ.

The defending champions have fallen. Now, a new race is on for the PWLB trophy.
