By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) is in full preparation mode for their FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches next month, where they will face Montserrat on June 4 in an away fixture before hosting Panama on June 7 at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan. As part of their final warm-up, the BMNT will take on Mexican team Deportivo Aragón from Oaxaca on Thursday, May 22, at 7:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan in a key international friendly.
The friendly fixture serves as an opportunity for the BMNT to fine-tune their strategies under the guidance of Uruguayan technical director Daniel Bartolotta and a seasoned Mexican coaching staff. Their preparations have intensified over the past weeks, incorporating tactical drills and sports psychology sessions aimed at bolstering team cohesion and mental resilience.
The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) has gone to great lengths to ensure the match happens, covering accommodation, meals, and local transportation for Deportivo Aragón during their stay in Belize. Additionally, the federation is managing stadium logistics and match-day preparations to create the ideal environment for the encounter.
Deportivo Aragón, a club based in Oaxaca, Mexico, has been competing in the Copa Luis R. Conríquez, an international tournament featuring teams from Mexico and the United States. The teams that compete in that cup are strengthened by players who previously played professionally in their countries and abroad, including Luis Ángel Landin. Landin had a distinguished career in Mexico, playing for clubs such as Cruz Azul, Morelia, and Querétaro. He also made history as the first Mexican Designated Player in Major League Soccer with Houston Dynamo. On the international stage, he represented Mexico in the 2007 Copa América and was part of the squad that won the 2008 CONCACAF Pre-Olympic Tournament with the U-23 team. Later in his career, Landin found success in Central America, helping Guastatoya win the 2020 Apertura in Guatemala.
To enhance fan engagement, the FFB has also arranged promotional activities, including a VIP Meet & Greet where supporters can interact with local and international players.
The FFB said that with players like Landín, Yosgart Gutiérrez, and Carlos Gutierrez featuring in the match, Deportivo Aragón’s visit promises an exciting challenge for the BMNT. The FFB’s investment in this fixture aligns with the larger Mexico-Belize Project, an initiative aimed at improving Belize’s international football standing through elite training and strategic competition.
General admission tickets are available for $10 and VIP access for $25.
