By Zoila Palma: A key conservation agreement to protect scarlet macaws in the Maya Forest has been renewed for another five years.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), originally signed on July 7, 2016, in Flores, unites Natura Mexicana (Mexico), Wildlife Conservation Society (Guatemala), and Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) in Belize.
The agreement promotes coordinated research, management, and conservation of the scarlet macaw subspecies Ara macao cyanoptera, aiming to protect one of its last strongholds in the region.
The Maya Forest, which spans parts of Guatemala, Mexico, and Belize, faces increasing threats from deforestation and the illegal wildlife trade.
FCD has led a macaw conservation and recovery program for over a decade and will continue its work under the renewed pact, which emphasizes a unified trinational approach to preserving the species and its habitat.
