By Zoila Palma: Ruth Eleonora López, a prominent human rights lawyer and outspoken critic of El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, has been arrested, drawing sharp criticism from rights groups who call it part of an authoritarian crackdown.
López, head of the Anti-Corruption and Justice Unit at Cristosal, is accused of involvement in the theft of public funds.
Her family and colleagues say she was detained under false pretenses and denied access to legal representation, with her whereabouts still unknown, CNN reports.
Cristosal labeled the incident a “short-term forced disappearance,” calling for transparency and legal access. López has been vocal against government corruption, Bitcoin spending, and the prolonged state of emergency under which over 87,000 people have been arrested since 2022.
Amnesty International and other rights organizations condemned the arrest, warning that El Salvador’s emergency powers are now being used to silence dissent.
