By Zoila Palma: Marking his first year in office, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed his commitment to peace with China but stressed the need to bolster the island’s defences, Reuters report.
“Peace is priceless, but we cannot live in illusions,” Lai said, calling for dialogue with China based on mutual respect. He reiterated that only Taiwan’s people can decide their future.
Beijing, which sees Lai as a “separatist,” dismissed his remarks as “doomed to fail.”
Tensions remain high following recent Chinese military drills near the island, with Taiwan’s defence ministry reporting increased activity in the region.
Lai also announced plans for a sovereign wealth fund to boost Taiwan’s tech-driven economy and confirmed smooth ongoing trade talks with the U.S., despite looming tariff concerns.
