Budget Debate scheduled for next week; Government expected to brag, Opposition to hammer inflation and crime

By Aaron Humes: The second reading of the General Revenue and Appropriation Bill 2025-2026 resumes Monday morning at 10 a.m. in Belmopan.

After another largely successful year economically save for inflation in goods and services, speeches from Monday to Wednesday will feature Ministers outlining their achievements, thumping their chests on the likes of debt reduction and economic growth in tourism, agriculture, BPO’s etc.

Meanwhile, the Opposition will almost certainly be hammering the government on inflation, food prices, addressing crime and social issues.

The Government projects total revenue and grants for this fiscal year at 1.74 billion dollars, from taxes, royalties, licenses, revenue accrued by Government ministries and so on, and projected expenditure or spending of 1.782 billion dollars including more than 698 million dollars on salaries or ‘personal emoluments’ as they are described.

The debate also follows the General Election in which the Government easily overcame a divided Opposition to continue in office.
