By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) played to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Mexican exhibition club Deportivo Aragón in an international friendly at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan. The match served as a crucial test for BMNT ahead of their FIFA World Cup Qualifiers next month.
Belize struck early in the 16th minute, with Izon Gill finding the back of the net to give his team an early advantage. However, Deportivo Aragón responded in the second half with Luis Ángel Landín leveling the score in the 71st minute and ensuring the match ended in a draw.
This friendly was the final opportunity for BMNT to fine-tune their tactics before their 2025 qualifying campaign begins on June 4 with an away fixture against Montserrat in Trinidad and Tobago, followed by a home match against Panama on June 7.
Under the guidance of Uruguayan technical director Daniel Bartolotta and an experienced Mexican coaching staff, BMNT has been preparing rigorously with tactical training, sports psychology sessions, and team-building exercises to strengthen cohesion and mental resilience.
Deportivo Aragón, based in Oaxaca, Mexico, has been competing in the Copa Luis R. Conríquez, an international tournament featuring teams from Mexico and the United States. Their squad includes experienced players such as Landín, a former Mexican international who played for Cruz Azul, Morelia, and Querétaro.
