By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is gearing up for its scheduled National Party Council (NPC) meeting on June 14, amid ongoing controversy over leadership authority and party unity.

In an official statement released today, the Office of the Party Leader reaffirmed that there has been no change in the party’s leadership structure. The statement emphasized that the Party Leader can only be removed through a formal recall process, and confirmed that the current Party Leader, Moses “Shyne” Barrow, was elected on March 27, 2022, and reelected on August 13, 2023, to serve until October 5, the tentative date for the National Convention.

The message also cautions party members against tactics that could foster division and lead to costly legal battles. “Let us not be distracted by tactics that will only lead to further division and costly litigation,” the statement read.

The listed agenda for the June 14 meeting is topped by preparations for the upcoming October 5, 2025 National Convention, the selection of delegates from special constituency conventions, reinstatement of expelled members, and proposals for constitutional amendments.

It is left to be seen whether the expelled members will pass the test for reinstatement or whether an olive branch will be offered to current Leader of the Opposition Tracey Taegar-Panton and others under the agenda item ‘reinstatement of expelled members’. According to the executive, these expelled members are not currently eligible to participate in the upcoming NPC meeting.
