By Aaron Humes: American pastor Dr. Bob Roberts died this morning in Tyler, Texas. His long association with Belize came from evangelism with the Baptist Church, but most Belizeans know him through his inspirational “Sixty Second Sermons” on Channel 5 News’ evening news.
According to Roberts, a chance visit to the studio led to a conversation with then-Executive Producer Stuart Krohn. Dr Roberts’ vision to make the program “Belizean” resonated with the station, and the segment typically featured scenic backdrops of the country, captured by Dr Roberts himself during his travels. As he typically stated at the end of each sermon, the production was cooperative between his Christian Foundations of Faith organization and Belize’s local Baptist churches.
“One of my purposes is not only to share the gospel, but I love Belize… and I want people to love Belize and see it the way I have,” Dr Roberts once said. His impact extended beyond television screens, with strangers recognizing him, children mimicking his sermon openings, and believers drawing strength from his words.
“While it is true that my body died, I am not dead. I have never been more alive,” Dr Roberts said in his final recorded message of hope to his listeners. “I just changed one shore for another, a tent for a mansion, and have now taken up residence with those who have preceded me in death in a far better country…”
