By Zoila Palma: Israel launched a major airstrike campaign against Iran early Friday, targeting nuclear facilities and senior military officials in what it called a “preemptive operation.”
The attack, involving around 200 aircraft and additional covert operations, struck key sites including the Natanz enrichment facility and reportedly killed three top Iranian generals, AP reports.
Among the dead were Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s military chief, Gen. Hossein Salami, head of the Revolutionary Guard, and Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who led Iran’s missile program. The Israeli military said dozens of missile launchers and radar systems were also destroyed.
Iran quickly responded by launching more than 100 drones toward Israel.
Israeli officials said most were intercepted before reaching their airspace. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei promised “severe punishment,” while also accusing Israel of hitting residential areas.
The strikes come a day after Iran was censured by the U.N. nuclear watchdog and amid longstanding fears over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack was necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, calling it “a fight for Israel’s survival.”
Global leaders have urged immediate de-escalation.
The U.S. distanced itself from the operation, stating it was not involved and warning Iran against targeting American assets.
President Donald Trump urged Iran to negotiate a new nuclear deal, warning that continued conflict would lead to “even more brutal” strikes.
