By Zoila Palma: Vishwaskumar Ramesh, the only survivor of Thursday’s devastating Air India plane crash that killed 246 people, described his miraculous escape in an emotional interview from his hospital bed, GMA reports.
“Everything happened in front of my eyes. I thought I would die,” Ramesh told NDTV.
The plane crashed into a medical building near Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff, killing all 241 passengers and crew, along with five people on the ground. Many others were injured.
Ramesh said he survived because the section of the aircraft he was seated in broke into a space on the building’s lower level, allowing him to jump out. “I don’t know how I got out. The airhostess died in front of me.”
His brother called his survival a “miracle.”
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had been en route to the UK. Officials confirmed the aircraft had over 41,000 flight hours, an average amount for its model. Boeing expressed condolences and pledged support for the investigation.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the tragedy “heartbreaking beyond words,” as the nation mourns one of its worst aviation disasters.
