By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Virtual Embassy in Iran has issued an urgent security alert, warning all American citizens to avoid travel to Iran and to leave the country immediately if currently there. The alert comes amid heightened regional tensions and the threat of additional military strikes.
The advisory, released today, emphasizes that U.S. citizens in Iran face increasing risks and should not rely on U.S. government assistance for evacuation.
The United States has no formal diplomatic presence in Iran, and the Swiss Embassy in Tehran currently represents U.S. interests.
As of June 13, Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization has closed the country’s airspace until further notice, complicating any departure plans. The embassy advises travelers to check with airlines for the latest updates.
Americans unable to leave are urged to shelter in place, secure necessary supplies, and maintain communication with loved ones. They are also encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time alerts and emergency contact.
