International News: U.S. orders over 500,000 immigrants from 4 countries to leave

By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday that over 500,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela must leave the country immediately, BBC reports.

These individuals were previously granted two-year stays under President Biden’s humanitarian parole program, which has now been canceled by President Trump via executive order. Affected migrants will receive email notices directing them to depart.

The program had allowed vetted immigrants with U.S.-based sponsors to stay legally, contributing to a 98% drop in illegal border crossings from those nations. The Trump administration, however, called the initiative “disastrous” and claimed it enabled fraud and harmed American workers.

While some may now have legal status through other visas, the exact number required to leave remains unclear. The directive is expected to face legal challenges, but for now, the Biden-era protections are suspended.

DHS has offered voluntary travel aid and a $1,000 exit bonus to those who leave on their own.
