By Zoila Palma: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Thursday that Israel acted alone in launching airstrikes on Iran, calling it a “unilateral action” and emphasizing that the U.S. was not involved, Reuters report.
“Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region,”
Rubio said in a statement. He also warned, “Iran should not target U.S. interests or personnel.”
Rubio noted that Israel informed Washington the strikes were in self-defense.
The escalation comes amid stalled nuclear negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, and follows months of heightened regional tensions since the start of Israel’s war in Gaza in late 2023.
The Biden administration said it remains in close contact with regional allies and is taking steps to safeguard U.S. troops.
