By Breaking Belize News Staff: After a record-breaking year in 2024, Belize’s tourism industry may see a slower summer in 2025. Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler said this week that current figures show just a modest 1% increase in arrivals so far, and projections for the months ahead remain “soft.”

Minister Mahler pointed to broader global issues—notably economic instability in the U.S. and Canada—as key reasons for the potential dip. “There’s a lot of uncertainty out there. I just got back from a major investment conference and everyone’s talking about the liquidity crunch,” he said.

The economic environment, he explained, is affecting the behavior of mid- and high-income travelers who would typically book luxury vacations to destinations like Belize. “People simply don’t have the flexibility right now to spend like they did before,” he added.

Adding pressure to the sector is a new Canadian travel advisory issued June 6th, urging caution due to violent crime in Belize. While Mahler said these advisories aren’t new and have been issued in the past, he acknowledged that timing matters. “We don’t need another reason for travelers to hesitate right now,” he stated.

Despite the forecast, Mahler assured that the Ministry is taking proactive steps to maintain momentum. He encouraged stakeholders to continue marketing aggressively and to remain optimistic, even as the global tourism environment faces growing uncertainties.
