By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday urged U.S. authorities to avoid immigration enforcement at Saturday’s Gold Cup match in Los Angeles, where Mexico will face the Dominican Republic.
Her remarks come after recent immigration raids in LA sparked protests.
A now-deleted U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) post had hinted at a presence at upcoming soccer events, Reuters report.
“We don’t believe that at any soccer match there will be any (immigration) action… we call for none to be taken by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” Sheinbaum said
She also dismissed viral images of protesters waving Mexican flags as “potential provocations,” emphasizing that Mexico promotes peace and its citizens in the U.S. are hardworking.
