By Zoila Palma: Planned U.S.-Iran nuclear talks in Oman were canceled following Israel’s major airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites, mediator Oman confirmed Saturday.
The escalation included Israel’s first reported strike on Iran’s natural gas infrastructure and over 400 airstrikes across Iran, including 40 in Tehran, AP reports.
Israeli officials say key nuclear sites in Natanz and Isfahan were severely damaged, setting back Iran’s nuclear program by weeks.
Iran responded with waves of missiles and drones, killing at least three in Israel and injuring dozens. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Tehran would face more strikes if attacks continued: “Tehran will burn.”
Iranian officials say 78 were killed and over 300 wounded in the Israeli attacks.
The U.S. says it is not involved in the strikes but confirmed its missile defense systems helped intercept Iranian fire.
Talks were set to be the sixth round of indirect negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. Iran’s foreign minister called them “unjustifiable” while Israeli strikes continue.
Regional and global leaders are urging restraint to avoid full-scale war.
