By Aaron Humes: Linton Floyd Maskall, 29, and Brian Ferguson, 22, are currently on remand at Belize Central Prison after being arraigned on charges linked to a shooting that injured a contractor last week.
The men appeared this afternoon in the Belize City Magistrate Court where they faced charges of use of deadly means of harm and dangerous harm against Jehvon Ramclam. Maskall is a tour guide residing at Maskall Street, while Ferguson is a fisherman from East Canal.
The accused, who appeared legally unrepresented, did not enter pleas and were remanded without bail due to the seriousness of the charges. The Magistrate informed them that they could apply for bail at the High Court, but they would remain in custody for at least 90 days.
The incident occurred on Thursday, June 12, around 11:20 p.m., on Maskall Street. Acting on information regarding gunfire in the area, police responded and discovered two live rounds of ammunition on the street. They also learned that Ramclam, 26, was shot in the left thigh and taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Initial police investigations revealed that Ramclam was socializing with family members when he had a confrontation with Maskall and Ferguson. A physical altercation ensued, during which both suspects allegedly fired gunshots at Ramclam, causing injuries. The suspects fled the scene towards the dead end of Maskall Street, escaping police pursuit.
Ballistic evidence recovered from the scene included live rounds of nine-millimeter Aguila and .38 S&B ammunition. Maskall was detained at the Racoon Street Police Station on Friday at 1:40 a.m., and Ferguson was apprehended over the weekend.
The next court appearance for Maskall and Ferguson is scheduled for August 18.
