By Aaron Humes: A quiet Friday evening turned tragic when Travis Swift, 21, a resident of Camalote Village, Cayo District, was fatally shot shortly after returning home from a nearby store. Witnesses report that Swift had barely settled in when an unknown assailant entered his residence and opened fire, leaving him with fatal injuries.
Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith, serving as the Staff Officer for the Belize Police Department, confirmed the distressing details during a press conference. “It is believed that shortly after Swift returned home, an individual entered the residence and fired multiple shots, resulting in his death,” Smith stated.
As police in the area continue their investigation, they are actively seeking the public’s assistance in identifying two male suspects believed to be connected to the incident. “Investigators have identified two suspects, both from Camalote Village, and have confirmed that Travis Swift was the intended target,” Smith added.
When asked about the motive behind the shooting, Smith noted that no clear motive has been determined as of yet. “At this stage of the investigation, no motive has been ascertained,” she said.
ASP Smith also clarified that Travis Swift was not previously known to the police. The grieving family say a younger son was also targeted after he tried to come to Travis’ aid, but was not injured. Swift joins his brother Oswald Arnold, whose body was found along the banks of the Belize River six months after he went missing in 2018.
The police are urging anyone with information related to the suspects or the incident to come forward as the investigation progresses.
