By Aaron Humes: A police raid on Thursday at Iguana Street, Belize City, resulted in the arrest of a family of six for possession of marijuana. K-9 Unit dog Axel played a crucial role in sniffing out the illegal substances, leading to the discovery of 27 grams of cannabis.
The family, comprised of Donald Wellington Samuels Sr., 77, a retired individual, his son Donald Wellington Samuels Jr., 29, a student, and four others — Marlon Samuels, 28, Noel Samuels, 25, and Elton Simon, 23, a kitchen operator — faced two counts of possession of controlled drugs in court.
During the proceedings, both Eldon Simon and Donald Wellington Samuels Jr. pleaded guilty to the charge involving 13 grams. In a separate admission, Samuels Jr. also accepted the charge for the additional 14 grams.
The court imposed fines of $150 each plus an additional $5 court cost, which must be settled by June 30. Failure to pay will result in a two-month imprisonment for the charges related to 13 grams. Samuels Jr., now convicted for a second time for drug possession, faces the same deadline for the fines associated with the 14 grams.
The charges against the other family members were withdrawn, allowing them to walk free.
