By Aaron Humes: Kyle Aswan Zetina, convicted of a triple homicide involving the murder of Excelsior High School Vice-Principal Alarice Andrewin, is scheduled for a mitigation plea on July 4. Zetina was found guilty of the murders of Andrewin and her two friends, Vidal Antonio Yuman, 39, and Maria Lucas, 19, during a trial that concluded on January 25.
The tragic incident occurred on June 3, 2019, at Andrewin’s home located at Mile 10 1/2 on the George Price Highway. The bodies of Andrewin and Yuman were discovered in bed, while Lucas was found on the floor. The medical examination revealed Andrewin was shot in the right side of her head, while Yuman and Lucas suffered gunshot wounds to the backs of their heads.
Following his conviction, Zetina has been held at the Belize Central Prison as he awaits the psychiatric evaluation mandated by the court. Zetina’s attorney, Norman Rodriguez, indicated that they plan to call four witnesses to the stand, including three of Zetina’s family members and the defendant himself, who will address the court directly. On the other hand, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Senior Crown Counsel Sheiniza Smith stated that they have received two out of three victim impact statements from the families of the deceased, which will also be presented during the hearing.
Initially, Zetina faced charges alongside Shawn Flores, but Flores was acquitted of all charges in June 2024 due to a lack of evidence connecting him to the crime. With the court now focusing solely on Zetina, he faces the possibility of a life sentence on three counts of murder. At the time of the murders, Zetina was just 18 years old. He said nothing in his own defense, as is his right but to the surprise of his attorney, during trial.
