By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 55-year-old Belize City construction worker, Victor Cowo, was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison today after being accused of attempting to rape a 5-year-old child. The alleged incident, which occurred on Sunday, June 15, 2025, reportedly ended with the child’s mother intervening to rescue her screaming daughter.

Cowo appeared before Chief Magistrate Deborah Rogers at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Coney Drive on Tuesday afternoon, unrepresented. He was formally charged with two counts: attempted rape and harm upon a minor.

According to allegations, on Sunday, June 15, at approximately 10:20 p.m., the mother arrived home to hear her child screaming from the living room. Upon entering, she reportedly discovered Cowo under a sheet on the sofa, with her daughter being choked and her pants pulled down. The mother immediately intervened, pushing Cowo off her child. Police were called, and Cowo, who was known in the area, was detained.

On Monday, June 17, a doctor examined the child and certified that while the child was not carnally known, injuries consistent with harm were observed.

Chief Magistrate Rogers denied bail to Cowo, citing the serious nature of the offenses. He will remain in custody at the Belize Central Prison until September 30, 2025. Cowo was informed of his right to apply for bail at the High Court.
