By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City security guard and freelance landscaper who claimed he found a gun and ammunition while working on Fabers Road has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to firearm and ammunition charges.

Kenroy Caine, 37, was sentenced on Monday in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court by the Senior Magistrate of Court #3, who opted not to impose the mandatory minimum 5-year sentence. Instead, Caine will serve 2 years, 1 month, and 28 daysfor possession of the unlicensed firearm, and 1 year, 1 month, and 28 days for the ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently, meaning Caine will serve only the longer of the two.

Caine’s arrest stems from a bust made shortly before his arraignment on May 15, 2025. According to police, he was stopped at a checkpoint while riding a motorcycle and acting suspiciously—sweating profusely and appearing nervous. Officers ordered him to open the motorcycle’s seat compartment, at which point he attempted to throw an object into nearby bushes. He was caught in the act, and the discarded item was found to be a firearm with matching ammunition.

During his arraignment, Caine told the court he found the bag containing the weapon and ammo while landscaping and was on his way to hand it over to police at the Belama Station. However, his explanation did not spare him from conviction.

Caine was represented by attorney Ronell Gonzalez and had entered an early guilty plea, earning a one-third deduction from his sentence. He was also granted a further reduction for time already spent in pre-trial detention—52 days from May 15 to June 16.

While sentencing, the Senior Magistrate noted that firearm offenses are “aggravated business” and must be met with serious consequences, regardless of intent. However, after reviewing Caine’s clean record and considering his guilty plea, a reduced sentence was deemed appropriate.

Caine’s friend, George Gordon Jr., who was with him at the time of the stop, had the charge withdrawn after Caine took full responsibility. Gordon was released following the arraignment in May.
