FIFA Club World Cup Monday Results: Chelsea, Flamengo win; Boca Juniors draw

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The FIFA Club World Cup heated up with three key matches across the United States on Monday resulting in victories for Chelsea and Flamengo and a draw for Boca Juniors.

English club Chelsea opened their campaign with a solid 2-0 victory over the MLS’ Los Angeles FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The English side controlled possession and dictated the pace of the match. Pedro Neto broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, finishing off a well-worked team move. Los Angeles FC struggled to create clear chances, and Chelsea extended their lead in the second half when Enzo Fernández found the net in the 78th minute, securing the win.

Argentina’s Boca Juniors and Portugal’s SL Benfica played out a dramatic 2-2 draw at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. Boca started strong, with Miguel Merentiel scoring in the 21st minute and Rodrigo Battaglia doubling the lead in the 27th minute. Benfica responded just before halftime, as Ángel Di María converted a penalty in the 45’+3′ minute. The second half saw Benfica push for an equalizer, and they finally found it in the 84th minute when Nicolás Otamendi headed home a corner. The match was intense, featuring multiple yellow cards and two red cards, with Boca’s Jorge Figal and Benfica’s Andrea Belotti both sent off.

Brazil’s Flamengo secured a 2-0 victory over Tunisia’s Espérance Sportive de Tunis at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Brazilian side dominated possession and created numerous chances. Giorgian de Arrascaeta opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing off a well-placed cross. Esperance struggled to break through Flamengo’s defense, and Luiz Araújo sealed the win in the 70th minute with a powerful strike.
