By Zoila Palma: On Monday, Iran told the U.N. Security Council that its recent strikes on Israel were “proportionate defensive operations” targeting only military sites.
The statement came amid escalating conflict following Israel’s surprise attack last Friday, which killed key Iranian military and nuclear figures.
According to Reuters, Iran’s U.N. Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said the strikes were carried out under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, which allows self-defense after an armed attack.
He warned that countries aiding Israel would be “complicit” in the crisis, specifically naming the United States for providing weapons and intelligence.
“Let me be clear, Iran has not attacked Israel. Iran has not started any war,” Iravani said, rejecting Israel’s claims of an existential threat.
Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon countered that Iran launched over 1,000 drones and missiles at civilians in the past 48 hours and vowed to continue efforts to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program.
