By Zoila Palma: Popular Mexican band Los Alegres del Barranco has released an anti-drug ballad in an effort to distance itself from allegations of glorifying a notorious cartel leader, CBS reports.
The group is under investigation after performing a song praising Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, during a concert where his image was displayed.
The U.S., which considers the cartel a terrorist organization, revoked the band’s visas in April.
In response, the band released a new track on YouTube, “El Consejo” (The Advice), warning of the deadly consequences of joining the drug trade.
Jalisco prosecutors welcomed the song’s message, saying it may help the group’s legal standing, though an investigation into suspected illicit funding continues.
Mexico has recently cracked down on narcocorridos—songs that glorify drug traffickers—with fines and increased scrutiny. The trend has also turned deadly, with five members of the band Fugitivo found murdered in May.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has launched a national music competition promoting peace and anti-addiction messages, with the final set for October 5 in Durango.
