International News: Taiwan conducts first sea trial of homegrown submarine in defense breakthrough

By Zoila Palma: Taiwan has successfully completed the first sea trial of its domestically built submarine, marking a major milestone in its efforts to bolster defenses against China.

The prototype vessel, named Narwhal, underwent tests for propulsion, radar, and ventilation systems off the southern port of Kaohsiung, Reuters report.

Underwater testing is expected next, with gradual increases in depth.

Built by CSBC Corp., the Narwhal is the first of up to eight planned submarines aimed at enhancing Taiwan’s ability to deter Chinese naval forces.

The project, valued at $1.67 billion, includes U.S. Lockheed Martin combat systems and Mark 48 torpedoes.

Taiwan aims to deploy at least two of the new submarines by 2027.
