By Breaking Belize News Staff: Clive Hendricks, a 44-year-old construction worker of Pickstock Street, is now behind bars following a courtroom appearance on Tuesday morning, where he was formally arraigned on a single charge of aggravated assault with a deadly instrument—specifically, a firearm—against a police officer.
The charge stems from a June 3, 2025 incident at the New Road Vehicular Checkpoint, where Hendricks allegedly opened fire on officers stationed at the site. Police responded by shooting Hendricks in his right hand, leading to his hospitalization at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH). He was released from the hospital on Saturday, June 14, just a day before Father’s Day, and was immediately handed over to authorities.
Hendricks appeared unrepresented before Chief Magistrate Deborah Rogers in Court #1 and pleaded not guilty to the charge of aggravated assault upon a police officer. Given the seriousness of the offense, the Chief Magistrate informed Hendricks that the lower court is unable to grant bail within 90 days, although he has the option to apply for bail through the High Court with legal assistance.
In court, Hendricks appeared with his right arm in a green sling and his hand bandaged—injuries sustained from the exchange of gunfire, according to police.
Despite officers reporting the recovery of a firearm at the scene, Hendricks was not charged with any firearm possession offenses.
Before being remanded to the Belize Central Prison, Hendricks asked the court to relay his next court date to his family, who were present outside, and inquired about obtaining money. Chief Magistrate Rogers advised him that money and other items can only be provided through authorized visits to the Kolbe Foundation and that any funds must be deposited into his prison account.
Hendricks is scheduled to reappear in court on August 12, 2025.
