By Aaron Humes: According to ASP Stacy Smith, Belize Police Department staff officer, questions regarding the equipment’s maintenance and safety checks have been raised after a jet ski belonging to a rental company exploded on Saturday morning.
Asked whether the rental company could face penalties for potentially inadequate inspections of their equipment, ASP Smith indicated that a thorough inspection would need to be conducted to determine any possible negligence.
On the morning of Saturday, June 14, at approximately 10:30 a.m., police responded to reports of an explosion in a lagoon near the Gas and Go Gas Station in the San Mateo area of San Pedro.
Initial investigations by the police revealed that the operator of the jet ski, identified as Jeffery Molina, had just refueled the watercraft when the explosion occurred. Witnesses reported that the force of the blast flung Molina into the water, while the jet ski drifted a short distance before catching fire.
Emergency services, including fire personnel, were quickly summoned to the scene to contain the situation. Fortunately, Molina only sustained minor injuries and received prompt medical attention.
