By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Ministry of National Defence and Border Security has moved quickly to shut down false rumors suggesting that members of the Belize Defence Force (BDF) would face pay cuts. In an official statement released on June 19th, 2025, the Ministry emphasized that no salary cuts are being imposed and that a recent memorandum from the Ministry of Finance has been misunderstood.
The June 16, 2025, directive does not order salary reductions but instead authorizes an administrative review and adjustment to ensure that all pay scales align correctly with the 2019 approved figures. Officials clarified that this move is intended to correct cases where some soldiers were inadvertently placed at the wrong points on the scale, which affected their salary, increments, and promotions. The Ministry confirmed that no soldier will be asked to return money previously paid to them, even in cases where overpayments were made due to past payroll missteps.
While no retroactive compensation will be issued for previous miscalculations, the Ministry stressed that these adjustments are part of a broader effort to ensure proper payroll standards and fairness within the force. As part of this effort, two new allowances have also been approved—the Jungle and Maritime Allowance and the Bush Allowance—both effective as of May 1, 2024. These new benefits will be reflected in BDF pay starting in the July 2025 payroll cycle and will be issued retroactively.
The Ministry concluded by reaffirming its commitment to transparency and fairness, stating that all corrective measures are necessary to ensure that BDF members are treated with respect and compensated appropriately for their service.
