By Aaron Humes: The Christian Workers Union (CWU) expressed frustration over the prolonged wait for a response from the Essential Services Arbitration Tribunal (ESAT) regarding ongoing cases affecting stevedores. Union representatives highlighted that it has been four months since their submission, with no clear communication or resolution in sight.
The union reiterated its call for ESAT to convene a meeting, revealing that previous attempts had been thwarted due to scheduling conflicts with their representative. A new meeting has been proposed within two weeks, but the union’s leadership remains skeptical about the promptness of the tribunal’s response, citing the undue delay as a significant concern for its members.
In addition to the issues with ESAT, the CWU addressed alarming treatment of members at one particular workplace, warning employers against disrespectful practices. While the union refrained from naming the specific unit, they emphasized that they would not tolerate mistreatment of their members and called upon management to rectify the situation promptly.
“We demand respect and recognition for our members as workers in this country. Employers must communicate appropriately with the union and its representatives,” CWU President Leonora Flowers stated.
Furthermore, the CWU criticized a trend of direct communication from a superior institution to an office member rather than through the official union channels, describing this as a lack of respect for established protocols. The union urged employers to adhere to proper communication channels and ensure that the CWU is included in all correspondences related to its members.
