By Giselle O’Brien: On Tuesday, June 24th, The Belize Policy Research Institute (BELPRI) at the University of Belize is hosting a seminar on Professor Victor Bulmer-Thomas’ research paper: ‘The Belizean Economy in the 21st Century: When and Why Belize Fell Behind and What to do about It.’
The seminar will feature expert respondents from major financial institutions in Belize. These notably include Mr. Carlos Pol, CEO of the Ministry of Economic Transformation; Ms. Diana Castillo-Trejo, Director General of the Statistical Institute of Belize; and Mr. Emory Ford, the Chief Economist at the Central Bank of Belize. After the respondents, guests are invited to take part in an open discussion.
The importance of this seminar and research paper by Professor Emeritus Victor Bulmer-Thomas cannot be understated. With the current state of affairs surrounding Trump’s Tariff war, the Iran/Israeli conflict, and the mass deportation of citizens from Central and South America, one can expect dramatic change within the Belizean economic structure. Belize relies heavily on imports from larger manufacturing countries, and the cost of living is directly affected by the decisions made in the wider international market.
With a career spanning decades, Victor Bulmer-Thomas is an established authority on economic history in Latin America and the Caribbean. He is a leading expert in the fields of international economics, regional development and political history. Bulmer-Thomas was a professor of economics and director at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) and now holds the position of Professor Emeritus at London University and Honorary Professor at the Institute of the Americas, University College London. He is also the author of over 20 books on the subjects of economy, politics and history, including The Economic History of Latin America since Independence and The Economic History of Belize (co-authored with Belizean born Barbara Bulmer-Thomas; Cubola 2012)
Registration for the seminar is now closed. Follow Breaking Belize News for updates on this story.
